A cargo is traded through six documents, issued in this order. Counterparty and sanctions checks come first, before anything is signed. Documents and credits go to operations@granore.co.
01 · Contract
The contract
Price, quality, quantity and Incoterm are fixed on a standard GAFTA form: No. 48 for CIF shipments, No. 49 for FOB, No. 78UA by rail or road. Counterparty and sanctions checks are done before we sign.
02 · Letter of credit
The letter of credit
The buyer’s bank opens an irrevocable documentary credit, sent as a SWIFT MT700 under UCP 600. It lists every document we must present to be paid, and by when.
03 · Inspection
Sampling and analysis
An independent surveyor samples the cargo as it loads, under the GAFTA sampling rules, and analyses it. The certificates of quality and weight go into the document set.
04 · Phytosanitary and origin
Phytosanitary and origin
The plant protection authority of the loading country inspects the grain and issues the phytosanitary certificate. The chamber of commerce issues the certificate of origin, with an EUR.1 where it applies.
05 · Bill of lading
The bill of lading
Once the grain is on board, the master signs the bill of lading. It is the title to the cargo: whoever holds the original takes delivery. By road, the CMR plays that part.
06 · Presentation and payment
Presentation and payment
We present the full set to the bank within the period of the credit. The documents are checked against the credit, the bank pays, and the buyer receives the bill of lading to collect the cargo.
